The expression can either be <strong>single-character<\/strong> or take more complex forms, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Composites<\/li><li>Repetitions<\/li><li>Possessive repetitions<\/li><li>Grouping<\/li><li>Flags<\/li><li>Empty strings<\/li><li>Escape sequences<\/li><li>Character class elements<\/li><li>Named character classes as character class elements<\/li><li>Perl character classes (all ASCII-only)<\/li><li>ASCII character classes<\/li><li>Unicode character class names<\/li><li>Vim character classes<\/li><li>Magic (not Harry Potter-related!)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picked yourself up off the floor yet?<br><br>If you\u2019re a regular SEO or a <a href=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/business-needs-content-strategist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">content strategist<\/a> like me, some of those RE2 groups make barely any sense, but those more coding-based will be licking your lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this article, I\u2019ll stick to more <strong>simple search strings,<\/strong> but you can check out the full <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google\/re2\/wiki\/Syntax\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RE2 syntax<\/a> if you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How to use regex within Google Search Console &amp; where to find it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Locating regex is really simple and is only slightly different to how you would\u2019ve run query and page searches before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Log in to Google Search Console: <a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/about\">https:\/\/search.google.com\/search-console\/about<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Simple character example<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if we wanted to look for all search queries that contain the letter \u201ca\u201d, we throw that into the custom regex field:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"499\" height=\"303\" src=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Simple-character-example.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Simple-character-example.jpg 499w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Simple-character-example-420x255.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 499px) 100vw, 499px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our filtered results now all contain the letter \u201ca\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1029\" height=\"487\" src=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-example.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-example.jpg 1029w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-example-744x352.jpg 744w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-example-420x199.jpg 420w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-example-768x363.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-example-640x303.jpg 640w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-example-750x355.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1029px) 100vw, 1029px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But, we could do this before using the \u201cqueries containing\u201d search option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, searching for a single character alone isn\u2019t that helpful when your site is ranking for lots of longtail keywords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regex allows you to use <strong>RE2 characters,<\/strong> such as the pipe \u201c|\u201d to specify \u201cOR\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we wanted to filter for search queries that contain either the single characters \u201ca\u201d or \u201cb\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"985\" height=\"454\" src=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-or-b-example.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-or-b-example.jpg 985w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-or-b-example-744x343.jpg 744w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-or-b-example-420x194.jpg 420w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-or-b-example-768x354.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-or-b-example-640x295.jpg 640w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/A-or-b-example-750x346.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 985px) 100vw, 985px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With regex support in Google Search Console, you would only have been able to do this one at a time\u2026 which proved to be <strong>frustrating,<\/strong> to say the least.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, you can see how wild you can go with regular expressions. Just be aware of the default partial match rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>2. Now, you can use multiple wildcards in combination with the correct spelling to do further analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also gives you an idea of <strong>relevant search intent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, this could give you insightful knowledge to run a <strong>specific ad campaign<\/strong> for pages that you wouldn\u2019t have before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The knock-on effect of this could be <strong>increased leads, conversion, sales and customers!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For this, consider using the correct and incorrect spellings with the pipe (|) symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>3. Full understanding of your traffic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no doubt how useful GSC is for understanding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>What queries give your site the most clicks, impressions and ranking<\/li><li>Which pages rank for those queries<\/li><li>(and more)..<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUT, we\u2019ve always only felt like we\u2019re <em>partially<\/em> in control of understanding the entire picture. We\u2019ve only been able to really search for <strong>the best data, rather than all data.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, we can hack and slash in much more detail, picking out some <strong>quick wins<\/strong> (from the above examples) that either needed more searching than before or were just flat-out missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, being able to see everything more clearly is going to lead to tailoring your sites for your customers much better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has always been important in <a href=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/content\/\">content analysis<\/a>, but you can now do even more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we can pass on those deliverables to our customers based on what they <strong><em>actually<\/em><\/strong> want rather than what we <em>think<\/em> they want, we\u2019re onto a real winner!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>4. No need to link Google Analytics and Google Search Console<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until now, we\u2019ve had to link our GA and GSC accounts to use regex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some of you may be frustrated with learning a \u201cnew\u201d way of filtering for regex strings, it\u2019s definitely a much more improved and simple method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Negatives of regex in search console<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>1. Takes some testing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not going to nail your expected regex filter the first time, so don\u2019t expect to!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, a common mistake is to put the $ expression at the beginning of the string instead of the end:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-green-cyan-color\">Correct: seo$<\/span><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-red-color\">Incorrect: $seo<\/span><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, expect a <strong>resource issue at the beginning<\/strong> and go easy on your SEO\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;but feel free to crack the whip after 2 minutes \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A way to mitigate the downtime is to check out the full RE2 syntax and see how you can apply it to your businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>3. Case sensitivity as default<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>SEOs aren\u2019t natural-born content writers, nor are we English language majors, so the default matching being case-sensitive is frustrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The way around this is to use <strong>\u201c?!\u201d<\/strong> at the beginning of the search string:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"622\" height=\"376\" src=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/case-sensitivity-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5087\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/case-sensitivity-1.jpg 622w,  https:\/\/marketmegood.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/case-sensitivity-1-420x254.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The above will return:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>seo<\/li><li>Seo<\/li><li>SEO<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps Google will provide us with an option to switch case sensitivity off in the future?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>4.
